Now the moon should also have its own time (and its own clocks). These 11 photos and videos show just how intense the Taiwan earthquake was

The American space agency NASA would establish a uniform lunar time on behalf of the White House. This is of great importance for lunar missions, according to the Office for the Regulation of Science and Technology (OSTP).

NASA should present a plan for new lunar time (LTC) by the end of 2026, which should apply to both Earth’s satellite and other celestial bodies, the OSTP said on Tuesday. Because time varies depending on your position in space, establishing a clear standard for safety, navigation and communications in space is critical, said OSTP official Steve Welby.

The intention is to link coordinated lunar time to coordinated universal time (UTC), which is the basis for calculating local time on Earth.

Similar to how UTC world time is regulated by a network of atomic clocks, a network of clocks on the moon could potentially be set up to regulate lunar time, the OSTP explained. The US is planning a manned landing on the moon in 2026 – the first since the Apollo 17 mission in 1972. (sda/afp)
