Rolls-Royce’s new luxury coupé approaches silently like a ghost.

Great performance needs the right tone. In the last 100 years, hardly any brand has excelled in the audio discipline as Rolls-Royce. Lamborghini’s scream is the rumble of a Corvette but a Rolls-Royce has always whispered – despite having more cylinders under its hood than most riot sports cars. It’s an expression the British take lightly.

But now that’s over. The new Rolls-Royce Specter no longer makes a sound except for the hum of rolling tires. You’ve never been more conspicuous in a car of the British luxury brand, at least acoustically. Electric drive is a real luxury. Absolute silence, no vibration, and you no longer have to hang the oil pump nozzle on the gas vapor tank mouth. Does the driver not do this? No, most owners choose to drive their Rolls-Royce Coupés themselves. There are other things to drive in the garage.

Of course, there’s nothing really outstanding about Specter. Even as the first Rolls-Royce to replace its high-tech V12 internal combustion engine with an electric motor, driving performance and dominance remain the same. The result of the electric drive is no less unique than the design of the 5.47 meter long Beau. Like its predecessors, the two-door coupé is a showpiece regardless of the two electric motors on the front and rear axles.

in great condition

Similar to the Wraith, engineers at headquarters in Goodwood, UK, implemented the idea of a luxury coupe as a never-ending fastback two-door – with majestic forms, massive doors and a uniquely stylish rear. And this Rolls doesn’t sit like a locker in the wind: its British all-wheel drive shines with 0.25 cW, which contributes to its driving performance and low noise level.

No one will miss the twelve cylinders, as the two electric motors, 258 hp (190 kW) at the front and 489 hp (360 kW) at the rear, run almost silently on each axle, but never put all the power together: the system output 584 hp (430 kW) and maximum torque of 900 Nm. However, this is easily enough to reach a top speed of 250 km/h and 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds.

big and heavy

Even if one or the other customer expected more: he will reconsider his idea. The driving experience in the Specter is typical Rolls-Royce – reserved, luxurious and simply gorgeous. The chassis combines air suspension, electronic shock absorbers and all-wheel drive, allowing the vehicle and its occupants to soar above all the immeasurables of everyday life.

But the 2.9-tonne weight is huge; 700 kilograms of this is in the battery pack with a net capacity of 100 kilowatt-hours (kWh). This is enough for a range of 530 kilometers. The maximum charging speed of 195 kilowatts should interest customers as much as the standard consumption of 22.2 kWh per 100 kilometers. “Our customers enjoy not having to go to a gas station and being able to charge the Specter at home,” says Torsten Müller-Ötvös, CEO of Rolls-Royce.

Stars for Stars

Costing at least 380,000 francs, the interior of the Specter – typical Rolls-Royce – is of course perfectly finished and can be personally customized upon request. So far, only the headlining of the Ghost and Phantom has been illuminated like a star, while in the electric coupé 4796 LED stars in the doors create an atmosphere. Even tall people can sit comfortably in the front and back.

More luxury on four 23-inch wheels and two doors is probably not possible. The Specter is as traditional as can be – look at the analog clock – and only as digital as needed in the infotainment system. Now anyone with a butler immediately calls the dealer: be careful, the waiting list stretches to 2025, the first examples will be on the roads by the end of this year.
