Did you know?: Slow driving is prohibited by law

A typical example of convoy formation: On mountain passes, drivers sometimes enjoy lame driving and sometimes high-speed cornering.

If you get caught on the speedometer too fast in Switzerland, you will be fined. Every driver is aware of this. But there is one thing few people know: Even those who drive too slowly can be penalized.

And for good reason: Attention is the top priority in traffic. Therefore, not only is it forbidden to endanger the lawn. But it’s also the handicap of others, including needlessly slow driving. Also, since this behavior in turn can lead to risky overtaking maneuvers.

Not without a compelling reason

It goes without saying that, according to Article 32 of the Road Traffic Act (SVG), “the speed must be adapted to the conditions, i.e. the specific characteristics of the vehicle and load, as well as the road, traffic and visibility conditions”. Therefore, there is of course no obligation to drive at 80 km/h in a curve, for example. However, constantly driving slower than necessary is not a license.

Article 4 of the Traffic Regulations Regulation (VRV) states: “The driver should not drive so slowly that he obstructs the smooth flow of traffic without coercive reasons.” This means: if 80 km/h is allowed and there is nothing to prevent it (route, weather, visibility, traffic), you should go at least 80 km/h if other vehicles behind you slow down.

always be forgiving

Cases are rare, in the canton of Glarus there was a learner driver who was fined many years ago. The trick: Since this is not regulated in the list of real fines, it always follows a referral. Then at least 300 francs or, as with a Blick user, 780 francs quickly ran out due to high fees.

But how much too slow too slow? It’s hard to say because it depends on the situation. If you take a slow turn on a toll road and there are two cars behind you, you will not be penalized. But if you then pull an entire row at 65 km/h instead of 80 km/h on the straight, yes. About 70 km/h, especially if you’re dangerously slow on the empty highway.

please make room

What does this mean in practice? If all conditions are ideal and you prefer to drive well below the limit, please look in the rear view mirror: a pillar indicates that you should at least largely exhaust the border or pull to the right at a suitable point (eg exhibition area) and let it pass.

Tip for slow riders: Don’t accelerate again on the next empty straight, stay slow, drive on the right edge and tap the right indicator to show: I’ll let you pass. Tip for overtakers: It is also allowed to indicate the desire to overtake with a flash or horn signal (here are all the rules regarding lights, horns and flashing).
