Although the first generation of the Toyota C-HR didn’t play a big part in the sales charts in Europe, its design created a stir. Like the Nissan Juke, for example, the C-HR was truly eye-catching with its extraordinary dimensions. Now comes the second generation. And in terms of design, it is a further development of the previous model that is worth seeing.
Visually, the short overhangs, front design and 20-inch wheels are reminiscent of the electric bZ4X and above all the new Prius, with which it shares a large part of the technology. This is why hybrid drives are used, which must not only be efficient but also increasingly guarantee fast driving performance. The hybrid system has been reduced in size and weight, and a new gearbox and control unit is used on the rear axle, complete with a more powerful high-voltage battery.
Finally the new all-wheel drive
The base model is the 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine whose hybrid unit delivers 140 hp (103 kW). Above that, there’s a two-liter version with 198 hp (145 kW). The top version will be a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) that will be charged at the socket with a 13.6 kWh battery for an electric range of around 70 kilometers. It delivers 233 hp (164 kW) and offers the driving experience of an electric car thanks to its single pedal mode. Standard consumption: well under one liter. Long awaited by many Swiss, the two-liter hybrid is finally available with all-wheel drive.
Inside there are five seats and two 12.3-inch screens for instruments and infotainment. Second, it integrates the electric range and possible charging points into the navigation system for the PHEV. The full suite of assistance systems now includes auto-parking, which enables remote parking via an app while the driver is outside the vehicle. Before starting the journey, the interior can also be pre-ventilated using a smartphone.
Compared to the previous model, the new C-HR has twice as many parts made from recycled plastic. These include a new fabric for seat covers made from recycled PET bottles or bumpers made from a newly developed resin material. Let’s start with the new C-HR at the end of the year; but prices are not yet known.
