AI should make more precise predictions than humans. So far, a member of the Viasuisse editorial team has estimated traffic congestion based on experience and data, Nomura said in an interview with CH Media headlines Wednesday. In the future, for example, weather data, how many cars are actually on the road and traffic flow will also be included in the assessment in real time.

Viasuisse hopes to be able to provide AI-generated traffic forecasts for critical road sections by the end of the year. For example, on the A1 motorway between Bareggtunnel and Birrfeld AG or Zurich Nordring, Nomura said.

Viasuisse’s vision is an app for drivers. Here, for example, the commute time can be entered. According to the developer, users can use it to evaluate whether it’s worth starting right away or working longer.

It is not yet clear when the individual traffic jam forecasts generated by artificial intelligence will become available. Data collection is a challenge: on the one hand, because of infrastructure, on the other hand, because of data protection. Nomura sees a possibility in using artificial intelligence to evaluate street surveillance cameras. “But it will take some time before we get there.”
