Anyone wishing to drive the highway must have an updated vignette on their windshield by January 31 of each year. Otherwise, there is a fine of 200 francs. This has been the case since 1984. From August 1, the vignette will also be available in digital form.
What is an e-vignette anyway?
Same as the classic highway vignette, but in digital form. The vignette is no longer tied to the vehicle, but to the license plate. The way the e-vignette was controlled was controversial in Parliament. Finally, the councils agreed to allow the federal government and cantons to carry out automated checks with fixed systems and mobile devices. These checks should not be made on a continuous and general basis, but rather on a risk-related and random basis.
How can I get an e-vignette?
You register your license plate through a web portal that will be activated by the Federal Customs and Border Security Agency (BAZG). The e-vignette can only be paid online by credit card or Twint and costs 40 francs. An app is not required for this. It is also valid from December of the previous year to January of the following year.
What are the advantages of e-vignette?
You don’t have to laboriously scrape off the old label. And you don’t need a new vignette when you buy a new car, as it is based on the license plate and not the vehicle. You do not need to buy additional vignettes when changing vehicles or changing numbers. Another benefit: the system reminds users to renew their e-vignette at the end of the year.
What are the disadvantages?
As with most digital functions, you give up data. BAZG knows whose e-sticker it is. However, it states that the name and address do not have to be given explicitly at the request of the observer. However, tracking on the plate is possible.
Will it soon be just e-vignettes?
As with Austria and Hungary, you will initially have an option in Switzerland. The Swiss Automobile Club (ACS) reported that if only ten percent of vignettes are sold the traditional way, production of sticker vignettes will cease. BAZG has not yet commented on this.
BAZG will provide detailed information on sales and implementation before the e-vignette becomes available on August 1, 2023.
