FC Zuwebe’s football players are ready for the Special Olympics World Games to be held in the German capital from 17-25 June. “We are really looking forward to this experience with the whole delegation,” says coach Ambros Birrer. It is a great honor for us to represent Switzerland.” And he became the national coach, so to speak.

Birrer coached the FC Zuwebe team for many years, which gave disabled athletes the opportunity to play football. Most of the players live, work and train at the Zuwebe Foundation in Baar ZG, which has been providing sheltered education, employment and housing to people with learning difficulties, intellectual disabilities or intellectual disabilities since 1967, and supporting them in the fields of work, education. and residential and integrated.

“Collaboration is very important”

With the Special Olympics World Games, the world’s largest inclusive sporting event now awaits: thousands of mentally and multi-disabled athletes will compete in 26 sports from June 17-25. The Swiss delegation is going to Berlin with 70 athletes.

Attending such a big event is something special for FC Zuwebe – so preparation is key, as can be seen in the video above. “We train every Wednesday, we practice teamwork and learn the rules,” says Captain Alexander Vogt. Great mutual understanding is at the forefront of the team: “We help each other in distributing clothes, setting up the door and keeping order in the cloakroom.”

According to Coach Ambros Birrer, togetherness is essential. “We place special emphasis on team spirit in sports and also in our public appearances.” Also, of course, the emphasis is on sports. Captain Alexander Vogt, “Good results are important to us!” says. “When we play well and get good results, it means a lot to me personally.” Football means a lot to everyone on the team. “We are all very interested in football. We like to watch matches live or on TV. And we talk a lot about football.”

Ambros Birrer (71), Coach: The team coach enjoyed working in the garden and spending time with his grandchildren. “I am empathetic, I can be well organized and I have clear lines. Doing sports with my athletes is always a wealth. I look forward to my experience with the whole delegation and it is an honor to represent Switzerland.”

Sports ambassadors for participation

FC Zuwebe players hope to achieve good results in Berlin. “I wish we could even bring home a medal,” says Captain Vogt. This is something special for him apart from the sports side. “We wish you many wonderful experiences, a beautiful opening and closing ceremony. And we want to see something from the city of Berlin.”

The mega event in Berlin is also an important one for coach Ambros Birrer, above all because of his motivated team. “Doing sports with my athletes is always a wealth.” His goal for Berlin? «We are special – we do our best!»

As actor Chris Etter says, the 13-man delegation (see photo gallery) sees itself as a sporting participant at the Special Olympics World Games, but also as an ambassador for greater involvement in sports and everyday life. «One of my most important wishes is for people with disabilities to be better integrated into daily life.» And her co-star Jonas Stalder adds: “My biggest dream is to end exclusion and discrimination.”

In the video you will get to know some FC Zuwebe players and learn how the preparations for the Special Olympics World Games in Berlin are going.
