Women on TikTok want a “lazy girl job” – the trend doesn’t match reality

The “Lazy Girl Job” is going viral on TikTok. A boring job should be the key to a happier life. The trend thus serves a cliché that is not true.

A few years ago, the “Hustle Culture” was on everyone’s lips on social media. If you didn’t get up at 5 in the morning to work at 12 and go to the gym at night, you were lazy. Now the “Lazy Girl Job” is going viral on TikTok, which goes against everything the “Hustle Culture” stands for. But is this trend better than its predecessor?

A “lazy girl job” is an occupation that requires as little effort as possible. Like a simple office job. The first video to go viral on the platform under the hashtag #lazygirljob was from creator Raeandzeebo. In it she said, “I love my lazy girl job. All I do is copy and paste the same email, take two calls, take extra long breaks, take more breaks and get a great paycheck.”

The clip has been viewed nearly three million times and spawned a flurry of other videos. There are currently nearly five million posts on the “Lazy Girl Job” on the platform.

The comments under the videos are always similar. “This woman is doing well” or “How did I get such a lazy girl job? I’ve had enough of mine,” it reads. TikToker Gabrielle_Judge, who describes herself as the “Anti Work Girlboss,” has included a detailed guide on how to get a “lazy girl job”:

Boredom and bitter undertones

Even though many of the Tiktok users seem excited about the “Lazy Girl Job”, most of the videos also have a bitter undertone. Many of the young women have chosen such a job because they feel that as a woman it is not possible to make a career anyway. Or at least not as a man. Moreover, the “lazy girl job” is not physically demanding but mentally demanding because it is totally boring.

Do you want to have a lazy girl job?

But some have chosen a “lazy girl job” out of boredom. Gabrielle_Judge agrees that work shouldn’t be what defines us as people. You should look for a boring job that pays a lot of money. So that you can enjoy your life outside of work and build something that truly fulfills you.

“Men would probably be less sure”

But do most young women really want a “lazy girl job”?

Michael Hermann, Managing Director of the research center Sotomo, says: “A trend like this always expresses something that is true. There are many women, but also many men who want a simple but well-paid job». The only new thing here: “These women in the ‘lazy girl job’ trend brag about being lazy”. For men it would be more difficult and they would handle it less confidently. However, the TikTok trend does not change the fact that many women and men are committed to their jobs.
