With this goal against Manchester United, Fabian Rieder shot himself into the notebooks of many clubs in December 2021: the 1-1 draw at Old Trafford was a dream goal.

In the case of Cédric Zesiger (24), it has been known since May 3: the Seelander leaves YB and moves to the Bundesliga in Wolfsburg, where he unfortunately has a European Cup-free season ahead of him. And that brings us to the keyword: Bundesliga!

Because the championship of our northern neighbor with stadiums sold out day after game also has a magical attraction for Fabian Rieder (21), the YB decade talent. He makes no secret of it: “The Bundesliga is my favorite competition. But I don’t want to cut myself off from other competitions either.” For example, England. There was concrete interest from the Premier League in the winter. But that was the wrong time. And, as I said, Rieder generally prefers a moving to Germany.

Two sentences about the future – and then: “We’ll see what happens. Now I want to concentrate on Sunday’s game.”

Expected transfer fee: about 13 million francs

It’s coming: the cup final. The last performance of the boy from Koppigen BE, a village with 2100 inhabitants on the border with the canton of Solothurn. It now comes down to who offers the best package for everyone. So for players, clubs and advisors.

First, there is the money. Djibril Sow moved to Eintracht Frankfurt in 2019 for 15 million. Rieder may be slightly more talented and younger than Sow was back then. And yet YB can hardly be expected to solve the 20 million people dream of. An amount in the order of magnitude of Sow seems more realistic. Or even a little less. “But we’re not going to go weak with ten million,” Christoph Spycher, the VR delegate for sports, recently said.

Not Bayern, not BVB – the ones behind

Those interested from the Bundesliga are there. This is also confirmed by Rieder’s agent Fabian von Matt: “There are three or four clubs in the Bundesliga that are very interested in Fabian.” Specifically: they are not the greats, not FC Bayern and not BVB. According to Von Matt, that would be too early because you would skip a step, which could backfire on career advancement. But the big money clubs right behind the two monsters. So Eintracht Frankfurt, Borussia Mönchengladbach, Leverkusen or Wolfsburg. Leipzig, on the other hand, is practically excluded in terms of philosophy. Recently there were also rumors about Union Berlin. It would be the Iron’s all-time transfer record and quite realistic only thanks to Champions League millions.

For the major leagues, Rieder’s transfer is not one that burns directly under the bosses’ nails. De Mercato has to get going first, with the top shots. A transfer of this dimension will therefore be processed in the second phase. “In June, but not in the next few days,” Von Matt hopes. Rieder himself will not move into the A-Nati, but into the U21 to take on the European Championship final in Romania. “If they take me too”, Rieder joked shortly before the selection was announced…

So there’s plenty of time for discussion in the days leading up to the first game on June 22.

The months-long training camp for the cup final is over

Back to the cup final. It will be the first time for Fabian Rieder. The last one, in 2020, he was not there. “We can make history there if we take the double for the third time in the club’s history,” says the ever-so-cool midfielder. Also on Sunday? “I think there will be some nervousness. But in games where everything is on the line, I’m always very hot.” And Rieder also has room for improvement, as he hasn’t been as dominant in the last few games as he was a few months ago. “After the championship title was decided, there was certainly a certain tension among us. Me, too. I have the potential to do better. Still, we didn’t do badly.” But now this week-long cup final training camp, which was interspersed with a few championship games, is over. Now it’s serious.

And opponent Lugano has a point. “They have been undefeated for two months, have a good structure and always have a clear plan,” says Rieder with respect to the Ticino.

As always, Fabian’s mind is clear. Even before his dernière in the YB dress. Which, of course, he never says.
