In November 2021, Admir Mehmedi will retire as a player of the national team (SFV boss Blanc, left): will he now return to Switzerland?

On the evening after his last professional match, Blerim Dzemaili (37) invites the entire team for a farewell dinner. When the team comes together again after the holidays for preparation, the FCZ starts in the post-Dzemaili era.

How does Zurich plan to close the huge gap left by the club legend’s departure? Dzemaili himself dismisses it and says after the match in Lugano: “The team will survive my departure without any problems. I’m sure FCZ will be better without me.”

His reason for this: the great responsibility that previously rested on a single player is now shared by several players, which would make them stronger.

Only FCZ or Winti are eligible for Mehmedi

Could be. But the fact is that the team hierarchy needs to level off again. Because especially for young players, such as Willy Gnonto in the championship season, Dzemaili was actually an irreplaceable father figure with his brilliant international and national career.

Captain and keeper Yanick Brecher (30) is now even more in the spotlight as an FCZ veteran and integration figure. Unless ex-FCZ and national coach Admir Mehmedi (32) returns, which is quite realistic.

The 2009 Zurich champion is still seriously considering returning to Switzerland for 11 years abroad, as he told Blick in March: “At the end of the season we’ll do a layout and see what’s best is for us as a family. I have been in constant contact with the FCZ managers since I left and our relationship is very good.”

Rumor about free transfer of Germans

One thing is clear: for Mehmedi, currently still under contract with Antalyaspor in Turkey (final round of the championship next Wednesday), only his ex-clubs Zurich and Winterthur are eligible in Switzerland. The fact that he could even play in the FCW Super League after staying up immediately does not make the decision any easier.

But there is still a Dzemaili gap in midfield at FCZ purely from the position of the team. The FCZ wants to give substance to this in the short term. Because Ifeanyi Mathew (26), brought in in the winter, is not seen as a one-on-one replacement when planning the selection because the Nigerian plays more defensively despite his offensive actions. The name of Sebastian Kerk (29), a transfer-free transfer from Hanover, has been haunting in recent weeks.
