The 15-year-old player was declared brain dead as a result of injuries he sustained in a fight after a match at an international tournament in his category in Frankfurt (central Germany). The police confirmed the fact after it was reported by various local media.
At the end of the game, there was a fierce conflict between the players of the Berlin and French teams. In the fight, one of the players of the French team hit the victim on the neck and head, leaving him unconscious, which is why he had to be resuscitated and transported to the hospital, where he was declared brain dead.. The suspected perpetrator was arrested and is in pre-trial detention.
The organizers of the tournament announced on their website that they will do everything in their power to clarify what happened. “We are shocked by what happened. That is extremely sad. We’re on the floor. We are thinking of the colleagues and parents of the victim,” the organizers said.
FC Metz, the team of the alleged perpetrator, denied on their website that their player intentionally caused injuries to a rival. Also, the message states that the club is at the disposal of the German authorities in order to clarify what happened.
Berlin City Police Chief Iris Spranger said on Twitter that the events left her shocked and speechless. “I wish the family, their friends, the team a lot of strength in this dark hour,” added Spranger.
