“No longer my FC Bayern”: alarm signal! Club icon turns away from Bavaria

In the 1960s and 1970s, Sepp Maier was not only on the bench at Bayern, but also in the national team.

Sepp Maier (79), goalkeeper icon of the 1970s, has been through it all at Bayern. He was champion four times with the Munich team, three times he won the national championship cup (now the Champions League), once the World Cup and once the Cup Winners’ Cup.

After his active career, Maier was also a goalkeeper coach at Munich for 15 years and was a major sponsor of Oliver Kahn. He saw many trainers come and many go. Not every breakup was always clean and fair. Despite everything: Maier always had a huge Bayern heart, even after his retired career.

“You Just Don’t”

But now the icon is speaking: the events surrounding the dismissal of club boss Oliver Kahn and sports director Hasan Salihamidzic have pushed him to do so: “Honestly? It’s not my FC Bayern anymore,” says the 79-year-old in an interview with Sport 1. And he really takes off: “You just don’t do that, whatever happened. They should have said goodbye to Brazzo and Oli with dignity. Neither of them deserved that. That was bad style.”

The timing of the recall, shortly before winning the championship, was catastrophic. “I did not understand that and that is not worthy of FC Bayern.”

‘Oli freaked out as a goalkeeper’

Maier can well imagine that the dismissal was not well received by Kahn. He knows his former protege very well. “You just have to remember how Oli freaked out as a goalkeeper when he ripped out Andi Herzog’s ears, or when he kicked Heiko Herrlich with kung fu. This is Oli. You can’t change.”

Maier is not surprised that Kahn failed as Bayern boss. “Oli was always a lone fighter, didn’t look to the right or left. That might work as a goalkeeper, but not if you have a managerial position at Bayern Munich. Then that’s an absurdity. He just did his thing.”

That a club legend like Sepp Maier, who worked for FC Bayern for 50 years, is now so critical of developments is not a good sign for the series champion. Bavaria clearly has an image problem.
