Bayern Munich is bringing back its former CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge as part of the club’s fresh start at the top. “We will involve him more closely again and propose on Tuesday to include him in the supervisory board,” chairman Herbert Hainer said at a press conference on Sunday.
Rummenigge has “incredibly great merits for the club and is well respected in European football,” said Hainer. With the 67-year-old there will be “even more sporting expertise”. Rummenigge had handed over his position as CEO in the summer of 2021 to Oliver Kahn, from whom Bayern has now separated again.
Will Hoeness be back too?
Hainer responded to reports that honorary chairman and commissioner Uli Hoeness could play a more important role again: “Uli and I get along very well. We are constantly in exchange. He will always be an advisor to us.”
Hoeness and Hainer informed Kahn and sports director Hasan Salihamidzic on Thursday morning that the record champions would like to separate from the duo. The new CEO is the previous CFO Jan-Christian Dreesen, who was given a two-year contract. Salihamidzic’s successor has not yet been decided.
The search is “not easy,” Hainer said. They want “a sports director who can and wants to realize the goals of FC Bayern Munich – and they are national and international, to be at the top. We do not speculate on names, but of course we are looking for someone who understands his profession from A to Z.”
