Failed dress rehearsal: Swiss team disappointed at home shortly before the Nations Cup

Steve Guerdat and the Swiss team have to swallow a disappointment a week before the CSIO in St. Gallen.

The Swiss showjumping horses experience a competition to quickly forget at the Nations Cup in Rome. In tenth place, boss Michel Sorg’s team missed the second round and finished the test last. As a result, Switzerland fails the dress rehearsal for the Nations Cup at home in CSIO St. Gallen, which takes place in a week.

Already starting rider Steve Guerdat (40) has to accept 21 penalty points on Maddox in Rome, which increases the pressure on the other Swiss. While Alain Jufer (45, with horse Dante) and Niklaus Schurtenberger (55, with horse Steffra) have two downs and one down respectively, Martin Fuchs (30) with Commissioner Pezi gets as many penalty points as the two added together.

However, like Olympic champion Guerdat, Fuchs did not compete in Italy’s capital with his top horse. Jufer and Schurtenberger are replaced by Pius Schwizer and Edouard Schmitz in St. Gallen in the first of six Nations Cup competitions in Europe Division I.

Ireland secured victory in Rome by beating the Italians in the jump-off. (SDA/dti)
