Champions Hockey League: Rappi and Biel meet the defending champions

The Rapperswil-Jona Lakers meet defending champion Tampere in the Champions Hockey League.

The three Swiss participants know their opponents in the upcoming Champions Hockey League, which will be given a new format after a reduction from 32 to 24 teams.

Instead of a group stage, a sort of regular competition is played from the end of August to mid-October, in which each club plays six games against six different opponents – three at home, three away. The collected points result in a ranking with all 24 teams. The top 16 qualify for the eighth finals.

Meeting with the defending champion

Of the three Swiss participants, champion Geneva-Servette got the easiest way to the knockout stage on paper. The Geneva team will take on Bozen at home against Czech Dynamo Pardubice and French champion Rouen Dragons, and Lukko Rauma from Finland, Innsbruck and Slovak champion Kosice.

In the case of playoff finalist Biel and the Rapperswil-Jona Lakers, who secured their starting eligibility as the third-seeded team in the final qualifier in the National League, four of six opponents are the same. Both enjoy, among other things, a home game against the defending champion and the Finnish champion Tappara Tampere.

Like the other five founding leagues (Sweden, Finland, Czech Republic, Germany and the Austria-led ICE), Switzerland field three teams in the tenth edition since the relaunch of the European club competition. Last season there were still five Swiss participants, with EV Zug only being eliminated in the semi-finals by eventual winner Tappara Tampere. (SDA)
