With six wins in six matches in nine days, the Swiss national team has proven that they can perform at their best over a long period of time.

How does he do that? That is probably the question of Andres Ambuhl, who breaks record after record at the age of 39. Certainly not in your sleep. What sounds like a lame saying is not so far-fetched for the Swiss national team. Because: the equipment of the players now also includes special, functional pajamas.

For the last Olympic Games in Beijing, Swiss Ice Hockey consulted sleep researcher Anna West. “Sleep is an important part of recovery and regeneration. Those who have had enough sleep are more efficient. We wanted to take advantage of this science-based knowledge,” says national team director Lars Weibel.

Everything for the perfect conditions

According to the Lucerne native, who accompanies major sports clubs and associations across Europe, it is believed that about 50 percent of top athletes sleep poorly, with 28 percent complaining of daytime sleepiness. “A good night’s sleep is crucial to making progress in training and maintaining peak performance over a longer period of time,” says West. Especially in a motor, athletic and tactically demanding sport like ice hockey, good sleep is crucial to establish routines and ensure optimal recovery.

With six wins from six games in nine days, the Nati currently provides the best evidence. «The pajamas are super comfortable. I always sleep with it at home too,” says defender Romain Loeffel, who always has his own pillow with him. To ensure that the national players can deliver their best performance in the intensive tournament rhythm, we are constantly working on the perfect conditions for them.

Doctors, physiotherapists, dietitians and mental coaches have long been part of the norm. Wishes should not be left unfulfilled – not even off the ice. For example, the so-called “SAC hut” is part of the tradition at World Cup or Olympic tournaments. The Swiss spend a lot of time in this lounge in the hotel, where “Swissness” is of paramount importance.

“Great influence on the organs”

An important element that record man Ambühl repeatedly mentions is recovery. A “pischi” should help – but how? The pajamas are made of a special fabric. “This ensures that the body temperature remains constant while sleeping and that you sweat less under the blanket or freeze without a blanket. This has a major impact on different organs and therefore on the different sleep phases. As a result, you sleep more peacefully and you are rested and relaxed the next day,” explains national coach Weibel, who has already received a lot of positive feedback from the national team. Well, sweet – or golden – dreams.
