The football world came to a standstill during the semi-finals of the Conference League between Basel and Fiorentina.

There were anxious minutes in the Joggeli on Ascension Thursday. The stadium fell silent in an instant and it was once again clear that there are more important things than football. A 45-year-old Fiorentina fan collapsed in the Conference League semi-final and had to be resuscitated. A respiratory arrest was the cause of the moment of shock.

One of the rescuers, Simone Santopietro, coroner and die-hard Fiorentina fan, now tells “La Nazione” that the fan’s father has contacted him. “It was incredibly emotional. He called me and thanked me for saving his son’s life,” says the doctor, “I was just doing my duty and, I want to emphasize again, I was not alone.”

According to Santopietro, there was also a nurse in the host sector of St. Jakob Park, who immediately recognized the seriousness of the situation. The coroner himself was apparently on the other side of the sector barrier. After he was hoisted over the bars, the two immediately began life-saving measures until stadium stewards brought the defibrillator. “After the shocks, the pulse came back and he was taken to the hospital on a stretcher,” says Santopietro.

Fan is still in Basel and wants to go to Prague

According to the online portal “Violanews.com”, which is close to Fiorentina, the fan has since recovered but is still in hospital in Basel. He told a radio station that he had already bought the one-way ticket to Prague to support his club in the final – hoping he would have recovered by then.

Meanwhile, AC Fiorentina thanked the helpers with a team photo in front of a banner. The scenes from the anxious minutes in Basel can be seen on the banner, with the helpers. (nsa)
