Incredible scenes played out during the Masters in Madrid. In the second round match between Borna Coric (26, ATP 16) and Hugo Gaston (22, ATP 108), the latter intentionally drops a ball on the field during a point – Coric has a set ball. Gaston wants to force an interruption and a replay of the point, an absolutely unsportsmanlike thing in tennis.
The reaction of the ATP is therefore harsh: the world federation for men’s tennis issues a fine of 144,000 francs! This decision is justified by the fact that the Frenchman has already been spotted with unsportsmanlike conduct four times this season. Since the number 108 in the world only earned 114,218 francs this year, half of the fines were suspended.
Gaston has not yet won a tournament at the highest level, the closest he came in 2021 in Gstaad, where he was defeated in straight sets by Casper Ruud (ATP 4/24). In 2020, he also sensationally reached the fourth round as a qualifier at the French Open when he defeated Stan Wawrinka (38, ATP 88) in five sets in the third round. (nsa)
