Blick reported: On Wednesday, the Polish alpinist Kacper Tekieli († 38) tragically died on the Jungfrau. Now there are new details about the extreme athlete’s death. He did not die during the ascent, as first reported. The husband of Polish cross-country legend Justyna Kowalczyk (40) apparently had reached the top of the Jungfrau. As the Polish newspaper “Wspinanie” reports, he was hit by an avalanche while descending on his snowboard.
The day before his death, Tekieli had shared his GPS data on the Strava tracking app, according to the Explorersweb web portal, which specializes in extreme sports. The data showed him at the Konkorddiahütte at 2,850 meters above sea level, high above the Aletsch Glacier. Tekieli posted another photo of the hut on Instagram. He would soon send his soon-to-be widow a photograph of the summit, which she published after his death.
“I love you kittens”
From the Konkordiahütte Tekieli left for the Jungfrau summit. He reached it at 10:12 a.m. on Wednesday. Tekieli then attempted to snowboard down from the top. When exactly he ended up in the avalanche remains unclear. Due to the bad weather, his body could not be recovered until Thursday.
Tekieli had sent his wife and son Hugo the photo of the Jungfrau summit with the words: “I love you, kittens”. He stands in deep snow at 4,158 meters above sea level and waves his ice ax at the camera.
After his death, his widow must post the photo and add the text. “We love you infinitely, my love. Bravo,” writes the top cross-country skier. “Goodnight, honey,” and she calls him by his pet name. Kowalczyk is a six-time Olympic medalist and ten-time World Cup medalist.
silent career
As other recent photos on Instagram show, Tekieli had just conquered several four-thousanders in the Engadine. He was on a “ski tour” of Switzerland, as Snowbrains reports.
The Polish extreme mountaineer’s career was marked by lonely, spectacular high mountain actions. Before climbing the Jungfrau, the Avalanche Institute (SLF) had warned of a significant avalanche danger in the area. (kes)
