European Championship title 2002 and World Cup 2009 for men, European Championship final 2015 for women: The Swiss U17 juniors caused a stir several times in the past. Now the next generation follows in the footsteps of Xhaka, Reuteler and Co.

“Everything is possible with us,” says national coach U17 Veronica Maglia. After eliminating defending champion Germany in the preliminary round, the semi-final against France will take place in Tallinn on Tuesday. The team is characterized by a great sense of togetherness, a strong character and a healthy self-confidence. Ten players are already regularly used in the domestic Super League. Maglia thinks some of them could play a good part in the A-Nati in a few years.

Men aim for the semi-finals – then the World Cup beckons

“Things are going as planned,” reports Sascha Stauch from Debrecen. Marvin Akahomen’s late winner against Croatia put the men’s U17 early into the quarter-finals. “We had to suffer a bit – especially against the Netherlands – but we defended very solidly. Moreover, we are efficient on the offensive.” With the exception of the substitute keeper, all 20 players have already played.

A victory in the last group game against England beckons to a group win and that could mean that the hitherto strong Germans have to be avoided in the quarter-finals. “We don’t want to give away the confidence we’ve gained,” said Stauch. The big goal is the semi-finals, which will qualify you for the U17 World Cup in November. It would be the first World Cup participation since the world champion generation of 2009 around Granit Xhaka, Haris Seferovic and Ricardo Rodriguez.
