Alexander Zverev has had a difficult sporting spring.

These were sharp quotes that circulated after his knockout round in Rome against the eventual winner Daniil Medvedev (27). “1000 kilometers” he was at his best level, Alexander Zverev (26) said completely sober. And: “This is probably my worst tennis since 2015, 2016.” The Hamburger made the statements out of emotion, at the lowest point of frustration. And that’s exactly what annoys him afterwards. Before the start of the ATP 250 tournament in Geneva, he says: “It is not easy to give an interview immediately after the game.”

It bothers him when some quotes are taken out of context: “Then sentences are posted on social media that do not have the intended meaning. I think that’s unfair to us players.”

Zverev also cites an example influencing last year’s French Open. Afterwards, the emphatic statement circulated that he would certainly have emerged as the tournament winner if he had not been injured in the semi-finals. Here too Zverev defends himself: “I never in my life said that I would have won the French Open.”

Good memories of Geneva

The number 27 in the world is about the principle. But he also knows that (emotional) interviews immediately after the match are part of the professional tennis circus.

In Geneva he hopes to be more relaxed in front of the microphone. Because that would mean that he played successfully – and after a difficult sporting spring, button and frustration could finally be released. A good omen: in 2019 he already won the title at Lac Léman. If he repeats the coup, it would be a welcome morale boost for Paris.
