Daniil Medvedev wins the ATP 1000 tournament in Rome.

In the first set, Medvedev took over his opponent’s serve at the last opportunity. In the second round there are five breaks, the Russian eventually wins the last four games after a 3:5. He takes revenge for the defeat in April in Monte-Carlo in the only game against Rune, which also took place on clay.

Thanks to the premiere, Medvedev moves up to 2nd place in the world ranking on Monday at the expense of the Serbian Novak Djokovic. Only the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz stays ahead of him. Medvedev therefore seems ready for the French Open, in Paris he never got further than the quarter-finals. The 20-year-old Rune has lost for the fourth time since April 2022 in the round of 16 on the ATP tour – a win has since been followed by a defeat. (SDA/mab)
