At least nine people have been killed in a stadium disaster in El Salvador. According to police, there was mass panic at the Estadio Cuscatlan in the capital San Salvador. According to initial reports, there was a large influx of fans for the football match between host Alianza FC and CD FAS, the arena can seat more than 45,000.
As the National Police Agency PNC wrote on Twitter, at least two of the injured are in critical condition and have been taken to nearby hospitals. A video released by the PNC shows several ambulances in front of the stadium, from which paramedics rush to the scene of the accident.
In a first reaction, the Salvadoran Football Federation expressed its “deep regret over the events at Cuscatlan Stadium”. Alianza and record champion FAS are two of the most popular teams in the Central American country. (AFP)
