Zurich is known for having a strong youth movement. The Lions consistently produce good players. But the 2011/12 and 2012/13 Novice Elite (U17) seasons are out of step even for such an organization. In these seasons, the Zurich team had three of the six NHL players who are in Riga this year in their ranks: Jonas Siegenthaler, Kevin Fiala and Denis Malgin (all 26). “And Marco Miranda was there too,” the latter recalls.
And that’s not all. Detroit Red Wings player Pius Suter (26) was also part of this unusual team. Have they lost another game this season? Malgin laughs: “Yes, of course. That doesn’t mean we beat everyone.” In 2012, the lions even lost the final to Kloten. The next year they caught up with the victory.
“It’s cool to see the guys again today and see where we are,” said Siegenthaler, a player for the New Jersey Devils. “We’ve seen great things on and off the ice. There are a few little stories from that time, but I’m not sure I can tell them,” he adds with a laugh.
“The chemistry is still good”
Malgin and Fiala are together in Patrick Fischer’s (47) first line of attack. “The chemistry between us is still there,” notes LA Kings striker Fiala. “I don’t know if we still have the automatisms from back then,” laughs Malgin. “But it’s true that there’s a connection between us that’s been so long since we knew each other really well. Maybe that helps us subconsciously.”
Marco Miranda (24) has only good memories of his time with the organization in Zurich. Although he did not follow the path of his teammates at the time, the striker has still managed to establish himself at the highest level. “A lot of us have come a long way,” he says, who just won the title with Geneva-Servette. “So when we meet again it’s always a nice moment. The ZSC Lions have a rich tradition of success at youth level and I’m sure we’re all proud to have played a part in that.”
This golden generation continues to evolve. Should the 2023 World Cup be a success, the roots will go back to the Limmat in early 2010.
