The revival of Swiss women’s handball (first participation in the European Championship in 2022) is closely linked to the name of Martin Albertsen. Despite the contract, the national coach will now leave Switzerland at the end of 2024 – and all this a year and a half before the European Championship in his own country.
The Dane Albertsen has been poached by a European top club, which cannot yet be named for contractual reasons.
“I would like to thank the association and all of handball Switzerland for five great years,” Albertsen said in a statement from the handball association. “I am proud – both of the achievements of the national team and of the youth players. Swiss women’s handball has put an exclamation mark at the European level in recent years. The future looks very bright. But the opportunity I get now, you might only get once in your life.”
In addition to the A and U20 national teams, the 49-year-old also heads the junior academy in Cham, which opened in 2020. According to the union, the search for a successor to Albertsen is in full swing. (cmu)
