Bad luck literally stuck to the soles of his feet. Kilian Feldbausch (17) lost all spring due to an unfortunate and curious material defect. The tennis talent from Geneva, who was diagnosed with a stress fracture in his foot after the junior tournament of the Australian Open (quarter-finals), suffered another fracture directly on his comeback path. The reason: he was prescribed the wrong insoles. Now he is even in danger of missing the Junior French Open.
“His first injury had actually healed well. But then he suddenly got pain in the insoles and at a certain point he could hardly walk anymore. Then we found out that he had broken his right foot again – just in a different place,” explains Michael Feldbausch (55), Kilian’s father and manager. Too much pressure was put on the foot by the wrong insoles.
The bitter result: the hopes of the youngsters, who reached the semifinals (Melbourne) and twice the quarterfinals (Wimbledon and US Open) at the Junior Grand Slams last year, were hardly on the field this spring. “It was very frustrating for me,” says Romand, who actually wanted to fight for the title at the French Open in June – and actually planned the next big steps in his career.
Thanks to Monfils to the specialist in Paris
Sven Swinnen (42), who trained Dominic Stricker (20) until March, now takes care of Feldbausch. In addition, he is still cared for by his mother Cathy Caverzasio (50), who reached the number 34 in the world as a professional football player. Father Michael (formerly ATP 702) also works as a tennis coach, but mainly takes on organizational matters in the Feldbausch team.
Through contacts, including former top 10 player Gaël Monfils (36), the family recently arranged an appointment with a specialist in Paris who should provide Feldbausch with new, correct insoles.
Now the top talent (currently ATP 917) hopes to be able to participate in tournaments again as soon as possible. A final decision for Roland Garros – the junior competition starts on June 4 – has not yet been made. “But it will be very tight,” says Feldbausch. After all: the teen used the tennis free time to get stronger in the upper body. And he says with a bit of gallows humor, “At least I can walk normally now.”
