No player in American Major League Soccer (MLS) earns more money than Xherdan Shaqiri (31). Figures for his salary great. From a sporting point of view, however, he cannot justify this in the current season.
The Swiss national player collects the equivalent of 7.31 million Swiss francs per year in Chicago. He also trumps Italy star Lorenzo Insigne (31). The 54-time international of Squadra Azzurra has been playing for Toronto since the summer of 2022 and earns 6.7 million francs a year.
Chicago bets on the Shaq Attack map
That Shaqiri ranks above other big names on the MLS payroll is one thing. Even more impressive is how much Shaqiri pulls out all the stops in Chicago. The Swiss is the player in the league who accounts for the majority of his club’s wage bill. In numbers: Shaqiri’s annual salary of 7.31 million francs accounts for 41.8 percent of Chicago’s payroll (about 17.5 million). Shaqiri earns CHF 2.86 million less than all his teammates combined.
By comparison, Javier Hernandez, 34, better known by his nickname “Chicharito,” ranks second as the LA Galaxy’s highest earner in this statistic. The Mexican accounts for only 31.7 percent of the payroll. Insignia accounts for 29.1 percent of salaries in Toronto.
In terms of sports, they cannot justify the salaries
The fact that there are such large wage differences within the individual teams in the MLS has to do with the sophisticated salary system. Actually, the teams should only spend about five million francs per year on the team, excluding the so-called “designated players”. There is no limit to their salary.
This creates an unusual situation. Toronto, for example, which pays the highest salaries at just over 23 million Swiss francs, spends 59 percent of its wages on just two actors.
The examples given can only partially justify their salary. Shaqiri is still waiting for his first goal with just one assist. Chicharito and Insigne could both cheer initially. Their teams are also not in the playoff spots after about a third of the season. (dti)
