The Belgian Remco Evenepoel has to give up the Tour of Italy on the day of his time trial victory due to a positive corona test.

The announcement that the Tour of Italy was over for him came just hours after the 23-year-old Belgian’s stage 9 time trial victory to Cesena. With his second day victory in this Giro, Evenepoel also recaptured the leader’s jersey.

Following the world champion’s retirement, Britain’s Geraint Thomas will start stage 10 on Tuesday as the leader of the general classification, two seconds ahead of Slovenia’s Primoz Roglic.

A statement from his team Soudal-Quick Step late on Sunday said that Evenepoel’s corona infection was detected during a routine test before the first rest day. The Belgian himself announced: “I am really sorry to have to leave the race. As part of the team protocol I did a routine test, which unfortunately came out positive.”

The other team members tested negative

According to Evenepoel, he was “really allowed to experience something special in the first week of the Giro. I was also looking forward to the next two weeks.” Instead, he will now travel home in the car on Monday. “I will encourage the team and the drivers over the next two weeks.”

The team management also announced that all other Soudal drivers and supervisors were also tested and returned negative results. (SDA/dti)
