He surpassed Geraint Thomas from Ineos by just one second
Belgian Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step) took the adapted time this Sunday Turn From Italy just a second about English Geraint Thomas (Ineos), enough to take the lead and wear pink.
The 35 km between Savignano sul Rubicone and Cesena, in the Emilia-Romagna region, was followed by incessant rain which made it difficult for everyone to perform, but which did not cause any surprises as it was an extremely flat section without technical difficulties.
The Belgian respected his favorite mark and was the fastest with a time of 41.24. On his home field, he responded to the attack of his competitor, Slovenian Primoz Roglic (Jumbo Visma), at the end of the last stage; but perhaps he was left with a bittersweet feeling when he achieved it with only a second difference compared to Thomas and seventeen from Roglić.
And it was a stage where Evenepoel was expected to distance himself more from his rivals in order to manage the gap in the mountain routes where he is not as powerful or decisive for the time being compared to, for example, Roglic.
The Ineos pair formed by Thomas and his compatriot Tao Geoghean Hart, for their part, hit the table and appeared at a crucial moment in the competition. In fact, Thomas is second overall, 45 seconds behind Evenepoel, but ahead of Roglić, who is 47 seconds behind the lead.
Geoghean emerges fourth as the last rider less than a minute behind the Soudal Quick-Step rider.
This Monday will be the first day of rest since the start of the Giro d’Italia, ten stages in which Evenepoel’s falls and excessive caution of the roosters did not ensure a classic stage on the transalpine roads.
