Timo Schultz will be the new coach of FC Basel.

What has been perpetuated in recent days is now official: Timo Schultz (45) will be FC Basel’s new trainer from next season, the club announced on Friday morning. The German signs a two-year contract with the Bebbi.

As a coach, Schultz has so far only been active for FC St. Pauli. From 2014 he coached several youth teams at Millerntor for six years before taking over the first team in 2020. In his debut season 2020/21 he led them to 10th place after a restart. The following year, Hamburg looked like one of the three promoted teams in the 1st Bundesliga for a long time before being pushed back to 5th place in the closing stages .

After that, the team bled dry – and Schultz was unable to build on the success of the previous season with a much weaker team. In the winter of 2022, after a weak first half of the season averaging only one point per game, he was finally released. As a player, Schultz wore Pauli’s shirt from 2005 to 2012.

Schultz plays attractive football

His deployment in Basel will be his first coaching position abroad. Chairman David Degen (40) and sports director Heiko Vogel (47) would be impressed by how Schultz has developed the players at St. Pauli. And consistently played attractive, future-oriented football.

He would bring Loic Favé, with whom Schultz already worked in Hamburg, as an assistant coach. Favé is of French descent and, if the duo signs up in Basel, must become the mouthpiece between the head coach and the large French-speaking group in FCB’s selection. (byl)
