An Australian court on Friday convicted a former Australian rugby player jarryd hayne to four years and nine months in prison after being found guilty of rape last month.
The 35-year-old former athlete, who was found guilty by a jury on April 4, was charged with two crimes of rape woman in an incident that happened in 2018 in the city of Newcastle, about 160 kilometers north of Sydney.
Judge Graham Turnbull, of the Sydney District Criminal Court, pointed out during the sentencing that Hayne, who watched the verdict practically from the prison where he is, has a low risk of “re-offending”collected by the Australian public channel ABC.
The sentence for the former player of the Parramatta Eels club will be calculated from the entry into preventive detention in July 2022, and he will be able to request parole only on May 6, 2025.
