Bad luck for Simona Waltert, Jil Teichmann, coach Heinz Günthardt, Viktorija Golubic and Belinda Bencic: the Swiss will not be able to defend their world title in Zug.

Despite the best infrastructure in the Bossard Arena, the application from Central Switzerland was not well received by the International Tennis Federation ITF. The verdict is a disappointment for Swiss Tennis.

“Those responsible in Zug, who have shown their ability by organizing the ATP Challenger tournament, have prepared an excellent application and created all the conditions for the final to take place in the country of the defending champion,” said Swiss tennis president René Stammbach.

The final tournament in southern Spain is scheduled from 7 to 12 November. First, the semi-finalists are determined in four groups of three before the knockout matches take place. The opponents of the Swiss women in the group stage have not yet been determined. The draw will take place on May 24.

Last November, the Swiss, captained by Belinda Bencic and Jil Teichmann, won the title in Glasgow thanks to a 2-0 win over Australia in the final. (SDA/SME)
