Marc Overmars was shocked with a confession about his health. That is why he does not want to give up his job as sports director at Royal Antwerp.

In December 2022, Marc Overmars (50) suffered a heart attack that caused irreversible damage. Nevertheless, the Orange legend remains committed to Antwerp as sporting director.

In an interview with “Het Laatste Nieuws”, the Dutchman reveals new details about his health condition – and reveals the shocking fact: “My heart is 45 percent dead.”

But that doesn’t mean anyone should feel sorry for him, says Overmars. Although he has to be economical with his energy, he is a happy person. “When I talk a lot, I have to catch my breath and it takes energy to stay focused.”

It is therefore out of the question for him to give up his position at Royal Antwerp: “If there are important points or meetings on the agenda, I concentrate on them. I can recover the next day. I would rather die here than do nothing.”

The Dutchman has been in Belgium since March 2022. Michael Frey’s former team were recently crowned winners of the Belgian Cup – Overmars celebrated despite heart problems. Before that, he was head of sports at Ajax Amsterdam, but had to resign due to allegations of sexual harassment.

As a player, the 86-time national player enjoyed the wing. With Ajax he celebrated the victory in the Champions League in 1995. As a result, he also became a legend at Arsenal in 1998 as a double winner and then made the switch to the great FC Barcelona. (dti)
