Southampton are very close to relegation.

Was that for Southampton? Quite possibly, as with three games remaining, the bottom of the Premier League table is eight points behind a non-relegation zone.

Against Nottingham Forest (now over the line) there was a chance to take points from a direct competitor in the relegation battle. That fails, the “Saints” are defeated 3: 4 by the promoted team. Ex-Union player Taiwo Awoniyi put the hosts ahead with a brace (18th/21st) within three minutes. Although Carlos Alcaraz – yes, that’s his real name – immediately scored, Gibbs-White restored the lead of two goals before the break.

Oliveira (73′) does the same after Vojnovic (51′) was shortened again. A crazy game ends in Ward-Prowse’s penalty goal to make it 3:4, but it doesn’t come until the 96th minute. The victory of the “Tricky Trees” (Freuler on the bench) wins them over and at the same time probably seals Southampton’s relegation.

Leicester lose despite three goals

In the late afternoon there is already a real turf festival in London. Fulham beat Leicester 5-3 at home and fans of the 2016 champions also trembled with relegation in what would be their first since 2004.

After 51 minutes it was already 4:0 for the hosts, a new debacle threatens for the foxes. Then there is hope, Barnes shortened (59th). Just five minutes later, Vardy runs for the penalty – and misses. Has nothing to do with overtaking. Instead, Willian punishes the guests with the 5:1. The goals from Maddison (81st/penalty) and Barnes (89th) came too late.

Everton controls Brighton

To the bad luck of Leicester, Everton managed to surprise at European Cup candidate Brighton. The “Toffees” defeated the South England team 5-1 and overtook Leicester in the table.

The game was already decided at halftime: Doucouré scored for the first time after 34 seconds, and the Malian scored twice in the 29th minute. Everton’s McNeil provoked an own goal from Brighton keeper Steele six minutes later to make it 3–0 at half time. With two more goals, the winger ensures that Mac Allister’s goal before the interim degenerates 1: 4 into result cosmetics. (che)
