Great honor for Catherine Debrunner: The 28-year-old wheelchair athlete from eastern Switzerland received the Laureus Academy award for Paraathlete of the Year 2022. Debrunner succeeds Marcel Hug, who won the award for the second time after 2018 last year.
Lionel Messi, who also received the team award for the Argentina national team at the gala at the Vendôme pavilion in Paris, was voted “Sportsman of the Year”. The Magic Flea is the first athlete to receive both awards in the same year.
Other awards went to Jamaican sprinter Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce (athlete of the year), Spanish tennis pro Carlos Alcaraz (breakthrough of the year), Danish football player Christian Eriksen (comeback of the year) and Chinese Olympic ski freestyle champion Eileen Gu.
