Carlos Alcaraz (20) successfully defended his title at the Masters in Madrid in an exciting final. The Spanish tennis talent wins against the German surprise man Jann-Lennard Struff (32) with 6: 4, 3: 6 and 6: 3.
Struff doesn’t get a happy ending after his mammoth run. A week ago he had failed in qualifying, only advanced after a cancellation and started on. Reaching the final as a lucky loser was something no other professional had ever managed in the history of the Masters. Standing 150th in the world rankings at the end of 2022, Struff has now made the jump to 28th place.
The German missed the first tournament victory at ATP level, but was not taught. Against the favourites, Struff holds up well for a long time and keeps his nerve in check in front of a loud crowd. Alcaraz finally decides the decisive passage with his extra class. (SDA/nsa)
