US tennis star Amanda Anisimova (21) is taking a break from tournaments for health reasons. The current number 46 in the world says on Instagram that she has been suffering from her mental health and burnout since the summer of 2022 and is now ready for a break.

“It has become unbearable to participate in tennis tournaments. I want to focus on my mental well-being in the near future, so I’m taking a break,” the 21-year-old wrote in her Instagram post. When she returns to the tennis court, she will leave it open.

Her greatest achievements are two tournament victories on the WTA Tour and reaching the quarterfinals in Wimbledon 2022. The highlight of her career was the French Open 2019, where Anisimova reached the semifinals and climbed to 21st place in the world rankings.

Sudden death of father

Only weeks after the tournament, however, she suffered a heavy blow from fate. Her father, who introduced her to tennis and also coached her, suffered a heart attack and died at the age of 52. Anisimova therefore took a short break and, among other things, canceled her participation in the US Open 2019.

The American is not the only tennis player who interrupts her career. Former world number 1 Naomi Osaka (25) had previously taken a tennis break due to mental problems. Earlier this year, the Spanish Garbiñe Muguruza (29) announced that she was taking a tennis break. (mbi)
