Seraina Friedli (30) decided not to participate in the national team at the beginning of April and therefore not to participate in the friendly match against China (0-0). “I was just exhausted and realized I was empty,” says Friedli. It is the first time in her career that this has happened to her and that “a few good nights sleep” is not enough. She retires for two weeks and spends a lot of time in the mountains and in nature to recharge her batteries.
balancing act between sport, work and private life
A few days after Friedli, Lia Wälti does the same as the goalkeeper. “I don’t think there’s a pattern to this,” says Friedli. The sporting situation of Wälti and her is not comparable. In contrast to the Arsenal midfielder, the substitute for the national team for years is also busy professionally in addition to her commitment to FCZ. She studied psychology and sports in Bern, after which she specialized in training theory. She is currently doing an internship at the FCZ Academy to complete her master’s degree in top sport. Friedli also works as a personal trainer in Aargau.
What Friedli does is more the rule than the exception in the Women’s Super League. Combining sport, work and private life is a fine art and at least temporarily takes one or the other to the extreme. “I hope we are the last generation where this is the case,” says Friedli. Friends, family and free time are often neglected, as is regeneration. Friedli sleeps an average of seven hours, the alarm goes off at 6 am. “If we want to get further and closer to the top in Switzerland, it is important to become more professional, otherwise we will miss out on a few percent.”
Championship title and participation in the World Cup as a goal
Friedli grew up in La Punt in the Engadine. She was the only girl in her year at school. “It was clear what was being played on the playground,” says the goalkeeper – and laughs. At the end of primary school, she joined the football club in Samedan, the first girls’ team in Engadine. At the age of 19 she moved to FCZ, won five championships and four cup winners with him, before moving on to YB in Bern.
This was followed by a season in Italy. “An unforgettable year – despite Corona,” says Friedli enthusiastically. Especially nature and the warm people in Tuscany have done it to her. She returned to Zurich last summer via Aarau. With the FCZ she now wants to build on her previous successes in the playoffs. They are not in the favorites role because they could never have beaten the qualifying winner Servette this season. “But the title is the clear target.”
After that, Friedli wants to attack again in the national team. Preparations for the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand begin on June 13. According to Friedli, the koala is her favorite animal. But New Zealand has always been a travel destination because of its beautiful nature. The 10-time Nati player knows she has not moved up the internal goalkeeping hierarchy with her sacking in April. “But I had to look at myself as a person.” Football is important and the World Cup is the big goal. “But there are more important things in life than football.”
