“Happiness lives here”. That’s what it says on the front door of Domenic Schneider on his farm in the hamlet of Friltschen in Thurgau. Schneider stands in front of the house and smiles mischievously. Just like the heavy chunk with the rogue face usually does. His two daughters grab an apple before their mother, Olivia, takes them to preschool. The rural idyll is perfect.

Domenic’s parents are also involved in the generation household. His mother helps in the farm shop, his father and uncle support him in the stable and on the land. And if necessary, brother Mario, a top wrestler like Domenic, also lends a hand. The grandmother is still active. She waters the flowers around the house.

Emotions on the festival site

With his 145 kilograms spread over 1.79 meters, Schneider is not one of the absolute top athletes on the scene. But he has become the king of hearts with his attractive and offensive way of swinging, at the latest since the Confederate in Pratteln. His emotional storms of jubilation over the festival grounds are legendary. This contagious emotionality is rather atypical for him. Because Schneider is actually a person who is at peace with himself. It is better to be a little restrained, rather one word less than one mistake too many.

“Dodo” they call him in Friltschen and also on the wrestling grounds. “I’ve had the name since I was in kindergarten,” says Schneider. One of the boys must have had trouble with the pronunciation. Domenic became Dodo. The nickname was born. And Domenic, like his brother Mario, was already a handsome little boy in kindergarten. “We were never lightweights,” laughs Schneider.

40 cows in the barn

For several years now, the family man and top athlete has been running the farm, which has been in the family for 101 years. His day is long. “I start milking at five o’clock.” There are more than 40 cows in the barn, including “Melina”, which he took home live at last year’s Glarner-Bündner-Schwingfest. Later in the morning, as he escorts the herd to pasture, he sits on his four-wheel drive quad bike, which he took from the Temple of Gifts at the Confederation in Zug.

He’s always busy. Now the hay season is coming. Then he often sits on his tractor. “Two strong guys” is written on the side door. And the large apple orchard is in full bloom. Sixty tons of must fruit are harvested there. Schneider honors Mostindia. The apple queen is chosen every year in Thurgau. Dodo is the counterpart. The apple king in thongs. He rarely sits in front of the TV. Sometimes a ski race, sometimes an ice hockey game. But when running a 100-acre farm, there’s no time for Netflix and coffee parties. At 10 pm it is quiet at Haus Schneider.

Three times a week in the swing club

And besides the family and a lot of work, there is also a struggle. He trains three times a week at the Schwingklub am Ottenberg. Wherever Sami Giger swings. They often grab each other during training. “Sami wins eight out of ten courses,” says Schneider.

Giger is not only a club member, but also a friend. Schneider does not want to comment that last season’s overshooter did not live up to his role as a favorite at the federal level and has now also started the season cautiously in the Thurgau Cantonal. “He’s coming,” he says simply.

In addition to swing training, Schneider stands in the weight room three times. “But when time is tight, I forego strength training and not swing training,” he says. In the sawdust, he also gets the condition. “And the body gets used to the great forces that work there.” Schneider is one of the few top wrestlers who has never been seriously injured.

The great coup is still missing

Since Pratteln and his heartwarming performances, Schneider has not only had more interview requests and has to do the fan mail. He also has two new sponsors. Still, he couldn’t live off wrestling. Also because he has not succeeded in the really big coup so far. He was already in 15 finals, but won ‘only’ three wreath festivals. In Unspunnen there is a chance to become a big one.

On Saturday he is a guest at the Schwingklub Ottenberg in the Basellandschaftliche. Sämi Giger and the Schneider brothers are going to put the Northwest Swiss to the test.

And if things don’t go as planned on Schwingplatz, Schneider doesn’t have time to grumble. The farm is calling. Digitization and artificial intelligence are not the only things creating new jobs. The latest WEF study shows that farming as a profession has a bright future and that millions of new jobs will be created in this area worldwide in the coming years. “Someone has to feed the many people,” says Schneider. The only thing missing is that he caresses his stomach with these words. Wherever Schneider is, happiness is at home.
