The national team will meet in Madrid on May 15, and before the start of the tournament they will play a triangle with Italy and China

Helena Pueyo, an NCAA player from Arizona, is the big news on the list of Miguel Méndez, coach of the Spanish women’s basketball team, for preparations for Eurobasket 2023.

The list of 17 players is led by captain Silvia Domínguez, who has accumulated 201 matches, and is made up of regular players from previous tournaments and competitions and youngsters who have recently debuted, such as María Eraunzetamurgil or Lola Pendanda, as well as Nerea Hermosa, who was previously invited but not yet released with absolute selection. Galician women Raquel Carrea and Paula Ginzo also appear.

The national team will meet in Madrid on May 15, and before the start of the Eurobasket, they will play a triangular match between May 24 and 26 with Italy and China; between June 2 and 4 they will face Turkey and Belgium in Córdoba; and on June 9 and 10 he will visit Hungary.

From June 15, Spain will play the group stage of the continental championship in Tel Aviv against Latvia, Montenegro and Greece, and the final stage will take place in Ljubljana.

Miguel Méndez explained that the twelve players who will participate in the Eurobasket will come from the now-named group and that the intention of the coaching staff is “to make this group the best possible team to achieve the set goals”. “These players have all the talent, dedication and human qualities needed to represent women’s basketball in our country this summer. I am sure that they will lead us to the qualifications for the 2024 Pre-Olympic Games and the fight for the first places in the classification, a place that Spanish women’s basketball deserves,” Méndez said in remarks reported by the Spanish Federation (FEB).

The coach also had words of encouragement for María Araújo and Irati Etxarri, who will not be able to be with the national team due to injuries. “They are probably experiencing the most difficult moments since arriving on the pitch. I want to tell them that we will miss them and that we are waiting for them to be a part of this team,” he said.

“A player who was a key and fundamental part of this team, Astou Ndour, will not be with us on this occasion either, who will not be with the team this summer due to a personal situation. We look forward to having her back with us when she is available again.”
