The VAR in Switzerland is getting an upgrade.

The Swiss Football League (SFL) and the Swiss Football Association (SFV) have decided to introduce the calibrated offside line in Super League. The technology will premiere this season on June 4, 2023 during the cup final between YB and Lugano.

The technical upgrade is done at the request of the clubs. Where it was previously not possible to draw a calibrated line for extremely tight decisions, the video assistant can fall back on this option from next season.

“That is why it is now up to us to take the necessary precautions and organize the training sessions for the next season,” says referee boss Daniel Wermelinger, but he is optimistic: “Some video assistant referees are playing internationally and work with calibrated lines that already known.”

Software calibrates the playing fields

For the new technology to work as intended, the playing field for each game must be captured by cameras from three different positions and with 28 defined zoom settings. A software can determine exact coordinates on the playing field. The software only works as desired if well-drawn playing field lines can be seen from every angle.

In a final step, it is then up to the video assistant to define the contact points for the offside decision in contested scenes using a three-dimensional line.

Wermelinger is looking forward to the possibilities of the calibrated line: “The new technology enables the VAR to monitor offside decisions with great precision. With no room for interpretation, the discussion of ‘obviously and blatantly wrong decisions’ regarding offside becomes obsolete.”

In any case, discussions abroad continue with a calibrated line. (dti)
