And again it was Damian Ott (23), who was allowed to cheer in Thurgau last Sunday, carried on his shoulders. It was already clear after five courses: this young pigeon could no longer take the victory in the Thurgauer canton in Egnach. Ott swings impressively in the final against Domenic Schneider (28) and does not give his opponent a chance.

The trained carpenter left the sawdust ring as the winner at the Rapperswil and Toggenburg wrestling festivals in mid and late April. “I felt really good for the season. But I didn’t expect it to start like this.”

Pedagogical setbacks

Because Ott has had some rough times. In 2021 he wins two mountain wreath festivals as an absolute shooting star. With the victory over Kilchberg-Schwinget, the then 21-year-old made the absolute coup. In the wrestling scene, the name Damian Ott was on everyone’s lips at this point. But then his luck runs out.

During training, he twists his foot. Ott describes last summer as a vicious cycle of injuries and pain. At several mountain festivals he sat in the stands and watched his colleagues instead of tackling the sawdust himself. “That was tough, yes. But the injuries taught me to be patient.” It was an educational time. Mentally he became stronger. And with the crown win at the ESAF, the Toggenburger was able to close its season relatively forgiving.

In the training camp to the limit

In winter, nine intensive weeks of swing training followed on the Sück in Magglingen. Under the guidance of wrestling king Matthias Glarner, the young man from eastern Switzerland worked together with other top wrestlers on his technique, strength and endurance. He has never had it so hard, says the two-time Bergfest winner about the training camp high above Lake Biel. Several pounds had also tumbled. “Right now I feel very good in my body. Nothing hurts, everything feels smooth. This is how swinging is fun.”

When asked about his goals for the season, Ott pauses and laughingly explains that he will probably have to go through the books again. “With the victory in Thurgau, I have actually already achieved my goal for this season. I can probably raise the bar a bit higher.”
