Santiago Peña (44) is the new president of Paraguay. He also triumphs against José Luis Chilavert (57). The former footballer wanted to become “El Presidente” of his country. But the project failed miserably.
Even the forecasts for Sunday’s (April 30) election didn’t give Chilavert and his right-wing conservative Partido de la Juventud a chance. In the end, however, his result is even weaker than the predicted 2 to 3 percent. Only 0.8% of the voters, so about 24,000 people, voted for the world goalkeeper of 1995, 1997 and 1998.
The ruling party remains in power in Paraguay
Winner Peña collected about 43 percent of the vote. The closest competitor to Paraguay’s new president, who was running for the conservative ruling Colorado party, was Efraín Alegre of the opposition party. 28 percent of the vote.
Chilavert, who has caused a stir with sometimes right-wing statements and has former Brazil head of state Jairo Bolsonaro as a political role model, sent his congratulations in a Twitter post: “Congratulations on the game in Colorado.
