Tanja Hüberli (right) and Nina Brunner are in the quarterfinals.

Both Swiss teams cross the round of 16 hurdles! Brunner/Hüberli clearly beat the German duo Sandra Ittlinger/Karla Borger in straight sets (21:19, 21:12), Vergé-Dépré/Mäder have to beat the Chinese Xue Chen/Xia Xinyi in three sets (21:17, 14 : 21, 17:15).

Brunner/Hüberli, seeded number 5, struggled for a long time in the first set and was 17:19 behind. Thanks to four points in a row, they still got the handling. The point streak was even longer in the second set when Brunner/Hüberli won seven points in a row with a score of 14:12.

Vergé-Dépré/Mäder turn things around

The duo Vergé-Dépré/Mäder, in seventh place, was on the verge of defeat against the lower-ranked Chinese in the deciding set with a score of 10:13, but managed to turn the game around after a match point was saved.

In the quarterfinals, Brunner/Hüberli will meet the number 3 seeded Americans Sara Hughes and Kelly Cheng, who qualified directly for the quarterfinals by winning their group. Vergé-Dépré and Joana Mäder will compete against the best placed Brazilians Ana Patricia and Duda. The games take place on Saturday evening. (SDA/jsl)
