The goal from A Coruña will form part of the Rayo de Barcelona squad

Gerard Piqué’s success with the League of Kings opened the door to a women’s edition. The Queens League is about to start, in a competition that aims to open up women’s football a little more to the general public.

From May 6, the Cupra Arena in Barcelona will host twelve teams at the start of the championship. Coincidence with the slow second season of the Royal League forced the organization to reorganize the day. Therefore, it is thought that the matches of the women’s edition will be held on Saturdays, while Sundays would be reserved for the second season of the men’s edition.

The matches will have two consecutive 20-minute halves, with a three-minute break between them.

The format will consist of 11 days, playing six consecutive matches in the afternoon slot. After the regular phase, the eight best placed will play in the play off at the end of July.

Although little or nothing has been revealed about the players’ salaries, its president, Gerard Piqué, made it clear that the women’s edition “will be at the same level as the men’s in every aspect: salaries, game script, rules… We want this to be message to the world.” In the Royal League, it became known that football players charge 75 euros per game.

The participating teams are the same as in the men’s edition, but their names have been adapted in some cases. Twelve players held a draft to select their ten permanent players. To them will have to be added, every day, soccer players 11 and 12, which can vary.

The teams were assembled after a selection of 120 candidates. They all sent in a video a few months ago showing off their ball skills. Among them is Andrea Amil from A Coruña. After months of waiting, she received an email that she was selected for the draft. Amil was a member of Bergantiños last season, where she was the goalkeeper with the fewest goals scored in Primera Galicia. In this campaign, he made the jump to Interrías in the Second Federation, but he did not want to miss the option of playing in the Queens League. And it was like that. Andrea Amil is part of the Rayo de Barcelona team. The team, led by streamer Spursito, has Christiane Endler, the goal of Olympique de Lyon, as its ambassador and a mirror in which Andrea can see herself and learn.

He traveled to Barcelona to do the tests. “Everything was great. They sent us very simple tasks, and then a five-minute game,” he explains. From there, he made a presentation video and then passed the final selection to the draft. “I was super excited. I was very nervous while waiting for them to say my name,” she recalls.

With his signature, he changed the team from Sanxenxo to Barcelona, with the firm idea of getting a stepping stone that would allow him to sign for a professional club later on. In addition, at the age of 23, he continues to prepare for the opposition in order to get a position in the National Police. “It compensates for me athletically. With this, I would like to achieve my goal, which is placement in the First League,” he says.

For now, they train two days a week. “What we didn’t know was that even though they made a selection for the whole of Spain, they valued those from Barcelona more,” he says. “The costs of going abroad are expensive. We don’t have an apartment, and it’s hard to find one because it’s only for three months. They are asking us for a contract, and we don’t know what to do. We want to live in Barcelona, but we have no way,” he explains. A small pebble on the way for a player who wants to strengthen himself.
