The death of Jeremy Nobis († 52) continues to keep the ski world busy. In an emotional broadcast on local radio “KPCW”, several former companions spoke highly of the 1994 Olympic participant.
His former coach Bob Marsh and teammate Andrea Terwillegar (55) testify to the freeski pioneer “all the talents in the world”. But Nobis had problems with his psyche from the very beginning. As Marsh says, “He had a lot on his mind. And he did his best to get the most out of it while skiing or mountain biking. And to be honest, I think he did a really good job.”
Terwillegar says Nobis and his sister, Shannon Nobis, 51, grew up with only their mother. After retiring from the sport, Nobis, according to his friends and companions, seemed lost and increasingly sought solace in alcohol. He was stopped several times by the police and charged with drunk driving. To avoid punishment, the ex-ski star kept moving.
Ulmer says of the fallen pioneer’s final years: “Many of us (his friends) tried to help him and build a support network. It was very sad to see Jeremy fall apart due to alcoholism. Unfortunately, we realized then slowly that he should have helped himself first and there was nothing we could do.”
Nobis was found dead in his cell in Cedar City, Utah, on April 19. Resuscitation measures did not help and the American was pronounced dead. The police arrested him on February 11 because he did not attend a court hearing. He was waiting in jail for his new trial date.
