In an aerodynamically perfect position: Czech Josef Cerny races into the yellow jersey.

The Czech Josef Cerny removed the world time trial champion Tobias Foss by 3 tenths from Norway over the 6.82 km at Port-Valais. France’s Rémi Cavagna completed the podium, one second behind.

Joel Suter was the best of the 14 Swiss who started the tour. The Berner Oberlander of Fabian Cancellara’s team Tudor Pro Cycling exceeded expectations and finished fifth, just five seconds behind.

The victory of the Czech Cerny also came as a surprise. The 29-year-old of the Soudal Quick-Step team, triple world time trial champion in his home country, can point to a stage victory in the Giro d’Italia 2020 as his greatest success to date.

Last year’s second Gino Mäder lost 22 seconds – quite a result for the Swiss asset given the general classification. He lost four seconds to Bahrain Victorious co-leader Damiano Caruso.

The 18-year-old Aargau Jan Christen conceded 34 seconds on his World Tour debut. (SDA)
