Professional golfer Albane Valenzuela from Geneva is climbing to a new level at the age of 25. At the major tournament in The Woodlands, Texas, she placed fourth amidst the fully assembled world elite.
It is by far the best result that a Swiss female golfer – including the male colleagues – has ever achieved. In men’s golf, four Grand Slam-level tournaments are held each year, beginning with the US Masters in Augusta in April. Five tournaments are played in the women’s top category, two of which are in Europe: the British Open and the Evian Masters on Lake Geneva.
Missed jump-off by two strokes
The so-called Chevron Championship in The Woodlands in the state of Texas marks the beginning of this year. It’s worth $5.1 million, the fifth highest prize pool in women’s golf. Valenzuela shares fourth place with four other players and secures a check for a whopping $188,000.
With her 280 strokes (8 under par), she needed just two strokes too many to force a play-off against American winner Lilia Vu. In the final round, Valenzuela conceded the most shots within the lead group with 73 strokes (1 over par).
Valenzuela, the daughter of a French mother and a Mexican father who grew up in Geneva and holds a Swiss passport, showed enormous talent even as an amateur. Now, at an age that is still young for a female golfer, she is poised to secure an enduring place among the best in the world. (SDA)
