Snap! Heiko Vogel (47) is finally in the coaching trap after reaching the semi-finals of the Conference League with FC Basel. And shows no interest in getting out. The day after the coup in Nice, the German says: “It remains the same: I am resigning after the season and am only head of sports. My time as a coach was planned from the beginning as an interlude.”

FCB coach in the semi-finals: “We don’t have to hide from anyone”(02:48)

Since the resignation of Alex Frei (43) at the beginning of February, Vogel has been doing both: sports director and coach. Although there is still some laziness in the league under him, the mood at FCB has turned positive thanks to the international successes. It is therefore clear to the players: Vogel must also be their coach next season.

For example, Michael Lang (32) says: “Heiko has to figure it out himself. But he and the board know our wish to continue working with him.” When asked in the Blick interview what the future trainer should look like, Taulant Xhaka (32) quickly replied: “Like Heiko Vogel!” How should the new coach feel about such statements?

FCB-Lang hopes Vogel will reconsider

Lang has not completely given up hope that Vogel will change his mind: “The weighing is back and forth for him. He has already said a hundred times that he will not remain a coach. But if you see how he reaches us players.. .»

Although Vogel has had plenty of time to think over the past ten weeks, he may be making a decision based on gut feeling. Because Lang is convinced: “As a man, he is destined for the coaching job and he appreciates the daily work with us on the field.”

Vogel agrees, but is concerned: “I have been a coach for 25 years and to this day I still enjoy my work. But the decision to step back and shape a club as head of sport has been a long time coming. I have not doubted it for a second in the past ten weeks.”

“The new coach need not be afraid of me”

When asked about his big footsteps, Vogel brushes him off. He says: “The new coach should not be afraid of me. On the contrary, he will benefit from me. Because I got to know the team very well. I can give him things for successful work. And it is more pleasant for a new coach to take over a successful and confident team than an insecure one.”

But what if the first revenue crisis hits next season? And everyone waiting for Vogel to step back in as a trainer? Answer: «The fact that I jump back and forth between sports director and interim coach should not be a permanent solution. The goal is to work successfully with the new coach for as long as possible.”

That is why Vogel continued the search for a coach in Nice between the last training session and kick-off. The day after making progress, he hinted that white smoke could soon be rising over Joggeli: “We are working very hard and hope to announce something soon.” Appropriately, a new name has recently been haunting the rumor mill: Timo Schultz (45), legendary player from St. Pauli and coach at Millerntor until last December.
