The ski circus mourns Jeremy Nobis († 52). According to media reports from his home country, the American was found dead in his cell at Cedar City prison in the US state of Utah on Wednesday. The cause of death is still unclear.
Nobis was a ski racer in the 1990s and competed in the 1994 Olympic Games in Lillehammer. There he finished ninth in the giant slalom. The technology specialist took part in the World Cup 15 times and achieved his best result on his debut. In Adelboden he finished seventh in the giant slalom in 1991.
Two-time junior world champion
Nobis celebrated his greatest successes as a junior. In 1988 he became world champion in the Super-G and a year later in the giant slalom. After retiring from racing, Nobis traveled the world as a freeskier.
After his sports career, he went off the rails several times and came into contact with the law. According to “skinews.ch”, he often drove drunk and was responsible for some traffic accidents. He would also have given himself chases with the police.
Failing to appear in court earlier this year, Nobis was arrested and sent to Cedar City Jail on February 11. (byl)
